Cross seams |
seams when the ends of carpet pieces are joined together |
Cushion backed carpet |
carpet with an attached cushioning material on the back |
Density |
the amount of pile yarn in the carpet and the closeness of the tufts |
Fibre bonded |
also called 'needlepunch' - carpet produced from individually coloured fibres fed through a bank of needles to form a felted surface |
Gully |
distance between the gripper strip and the wall |
Latex |
polymer or rubber compound used to laminate secondary backing to primary backing |
Loom |
weaving machine for producing woven fabrics |
Nap |
another term for pile |
Pile |
visible surface of carpet, consisting of yarn tufts in loop and/or cut construction |
Pile direction |
lay of the pile, corresponding to the direction it came off the tufting machine |
Resilience |
ability of the carpet pile to return to its original appearance and thickness after being compressed |
Seams |
joins in the edges of different carpet pieces during installation |
Selvedge |
side edges of carpet (also spelt 'Selvage') |
Texture |
surface characteristics of carpet pile |
Tuft |
individual yarn that results from a single threaded needle penetration of the primary backing |
